Beginners’ classes
Although you’ll be welcome at any Scottish country dancing class, there are some classes designed specifically for new dancers. Beginners’ classes will teach you the main dance steps (there are only five) and simple formations used in many Scottish country dances.
If at times you feel a bit confused, remember that every dancer started as a beginner. We’ve all felt like that! To help consolidate what you learn in class you might find the information and videos at these links helpful:

What you’ll learn
Beginners’ classes will teach you the basic dance steps and formations used in many Scottish country dances as well as some dance etiquette.
You’ll learn travelling steps (used to move around a dance) and setting steps (used for dancing on the spot). And you will learn simple formations including:
- Hands across
- Figures of eight
- Advance and retire
- Back to back
- Rights and lefts
- Reel of three and four
- Promenade
